'Hurricane was surreal'

Brandon Nightingale, an American medical student living on the island of Saba, told he had been preparing for the hurricane's arrival -- boarding up his house with his landlord and following the 10 p.m. curfew to remain indoors -- but was still overwhelmed when it finally hit.

"Experiencing the hurricane was surreal, especially when people are saying it is potentially the strongest hurricane on record," Nightingale said.

"Around 6 in the morning the storm had peaked, in which I moved into the hallway to avoid being by any windows."

He also sent several photographs showing the damage left in Irma's wake.
